Bouldering and road biking in Humboldt.
[ Blog Entry ]
After reaching Humboldt on Sat morn, we went for a trail run through and around the Humboldt State University campus. Here's Judy returning from our run.
I've always wanted to get an HSU sweatshirt or shirt since it's the same as my last name. Unfortunately, the book store was closed.
After lunch at the vegetarian Wildflower Cafe, we headed to Moonstone Beach. Here's a view of the main Flat Top Rock area.
There was a wedding here earlier in the day. The day wasn't as dark as the picture shows - I forgot to turn off the flash for these two shots.
VIDEO: The Dr. Topo guide we had didn't seem very accurate so we didn't really know what we were climbing. Judy on a V0/1.
This was probably one of the most unique places I've ever bouldered. We were right on the beach! How cool is that?
We were worried that the temps might be too cold, but we were lucky to get near perfect climbing weather.
Judy takes a rest and watches the amusing 8 on 8 jungle-ball game where even the ugliest plays resulted in congratulatory praises like "great shot!"
VIDEO: Judy on a V2(?). It's a pretty long video because she hung out for quite some time trying to do the top out. She never made it.
VIDEO: This one turned out to be a fun and challenging problem. It took me a while to figure it out. I was stuck on this move for a while.
VIDEO: I finally figured the crux sequence out, but on this try, I forgot the beginning moves and burned too much time.
VIDEO: My last attempt and it was a sorry one. By this point, my arms were completely shot. I'll have to finish this one on another day.
Sunday morning we drove to the Avenue of the Giants visitor center (north end) to wash up and eat breakfast.
We drove north along the Ave of the Giants to start our ride. Here's Judy looking more than a little ridiculous.
The ride along the Ave of the Giants was really nice. The scenery was pretty, the road was smooth, traffic was minimal, and the grade was mostly flat with some rolling hills.
