This type of stove is apparently called a "donkey". Water pipes go through the donkey and the hot water is used for the showers. In all of the other places we stayed at, hot water was generated by solar power and then stored in large tanks. When the sun went down and the hot water in the tanks was used up, the showers are no longer warms. With a donkey, there is hot water available as long as the stove is burning.
