Since last year, Judy and I have been playing regularly in Phil Kaplan’s No Attitudes sand volleyball tournaments. This past Saturday, we played in the tournament with new partners for the first time. Judy paired up with Dave while I paired up with Bonnie. Unfortunately, Dave cramped up midway through the tourney and although they were doing very well, they had to forfeit. Bonnie and I ended up winning the Tidepool and so had our pictures taken.

After Phil posted the pics on his site, Judy called me up while giggling uncontrollably. If you look closely at the left side of the pic, you’ll see that Judy was able to sneak herself into the photo. Pretty funny. What’s funnier is that while we were laughing at Judy’s stealthiness, I noticed that both Bonnie and I have rabbit ears. At first, I thought that Bonnie was doing it to me and that Adam (the other guy in the photo) was doing it to Bonnie. This didn’t seem right as they both would have to have really long, mutant arms. It wasn’t long before we realized that Dave was actually the crafty culprit – you can see his white hat just above my shoulder. Good one Dave!

Today was Chris’ birthday and we decided it would be fun to crown him King of the Beach for a day. Judy and I got to the beach early to hide the renowned King of the Beach crown. Chris is a stickler for keeping the court boundary lines taut and straight so we decided to bury the crown at one of the line anchor points. We then intentionally made the lines loose and crooked, knowing that Chris would be compelled to fix them. He did just that, uncovered the crown, and was then, somewhat to his dismay, anointed King of the Beach.

After a fun day of volleyball, we headed back to Chris and Bonnie’s for food, drinks, and of course, delicious cake! Here are the pics and vid.

Update: Judy got down-n-dirty with Photoshop and created the masterpiece below. For Chris’ b-day present, she had this picture printed onto a mousepad. You’d be hard pressed to tell that Chris wasn’t actually there that night!

This is definitely the summer of volleyball for Judy and I. We met some really cool people who play regularly on Sundays at Santa Cruz so we’ve been heading to the beach every Sunday.

The Santa Cruz volleyball scene is great – it’s got a really mellow and friendly vibe that we really enjoy. For the past few Sundays, we’ve been pretty much playing volleyball from 8 or 9 in the morning until 4 or 5 in the afternoon. It’s a great way to spend the day. The only downside is that we’re probably spending way too much time in the sun. Sunscreen can only do so much, especially when you’re working up a sweat in the sun all day long. Oh well, what’re you gonna do? Life’s meant to be lived!

Today, we played in another No Attitudes tournament. We went 2-1 in pool play and then lost in the first round of playoffs to Ben and Suzy, a formidable team that ended up winning the coed division. As a result, we got bumped into the Tide Pool division where we got to the finals for that division. We played Andy and Kim in the finals. It was a pretty even match-up which made for a really fun game. At one point, we were down 11-6, but were able to rally back and win 15-13! Another (I just back-posted about the Jul 21 tourney) Tide Pool championship for us – yay!

As before, full tournament results can be found here and more photos here on Phil Kaplan’s site.

Partly due to my climbing injury, but more due to the fact that it’s just a lot of fun, Judy and I have started playing more volleyball. We play occasionally at the Stanford sand courts and last weekend played in a reverse co-ed grass tournament. We were definitely still a bit rusty and didn’t do too well. However, we could definitely feel our game slowly creeping back.

Today we played in the No Attitudes tournament and ended up winning the Tide Pool division. It was a really hot day (even though we were right on the beach) and the end of the tournament became more of a battle of attrition. Our rustiness has mostly worn off and we’re having a lot more fun, although we’re still getting used to playing in the deep sand.

The pics above are from Phil Kaplan, the tournament’s director. You can check out his site and more photos here. Results for this tourney can be found here and more photos from the event are here.

Site updates have been few and far between during these dog days of summer. Judy and I haven’t gone on any trips in a while, but we’ve stayed really busy. Judy sold her piano (Craigslist rocks!) because she just didn’t have the time to play it much and it was taking up a lot of space in our little abode. With the piano gone, our living room is much more spacious!

As mentioned in prior posts, we both bought road bikes and started road biking. My goal was to ride at least once a week to work and I’ve been more or less successful with that. Dave and Andrew visited on separate occasions from SD and I took them on some fun road rides. I’ve come to like road biking, but the problem is that with limited time, I’m often torn between road biking and mountain biking. I wonder sometimes if perhaps it wasn’t such a good idea to add yet another activity to my already extensive hobby list.

Earlier in the summer, while Judy was on a business trip, Jess and I played in a reverse coed grass tournament. This was literally the first time I had touched a volleyball in nearly two years so it wasn’t very pretty. The fact that it was near 100 deg that day in San Jose didn’t help either. We didn’t do too well, but it did get me itching to play more volleyball.

A few weeks later, Judy and I were riding our bikes around Stanford and came upon a bunch of people playing on the sand courts there. Turns out that a group plays there regularly throughout the week and some of them also play during the weekends at the Santa Cruz beach. Although we were both really rusty (our first few games were pretty embarrassing), we were both reminded of how fun volleyball is. We’ve been playing regularly now for several weeks (primarily at Stanford, but also a few times at Santa Cruz). Fortunately, our rustiness has gradually subsided and it actually looks like we know what we’re doing out there now.

On the work front, things have been pretty busy as well. Earlier in the summer, TiVo was granted an injunction against Echostar’s infringing DVR products. Unfortunately, Echostar was able to quickly get a temporary stay of the injunction so it looks like the legal manueverings will continue. In addition, TiVo received a stay in the lawsuit that Echostar filed against us. And last week I returned from a weeklong business trip to Korea, during which TiVo signed a deal with Cox, the 4th largest cable provider in the country. Things are looking on the up and up for TiVo!

Of course, Fall is fast approaching and that means… trips! The weather is cooler, the bugs are gone, and after Labor Day, the crowds are gone too. It’s the best time of year to get out and do things, and we’re definitely going to take advantage of it. We’ve got a number of trips planned, and with trips come pics and vids so you can definitely expect RohJuh.com activity to ramp up in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for regular updates!
