The Canyons

Roger snowboard jump at The Canyons

Judy and I decided to do a last minute trip to Utah for one last weekend of snowboarding for the season. Since we always go to Powder Mountain and Snowbasin, we decided to stay in Salt Lake City this time and try out some new resorts. The plan was to fly in Friday night, hit The Canyons on Saturday, go to either Solitude or Brighton on Sunday, and then fly back home Sunday night.

Saturday turned out to be unseasonally warm - it hit 70F in Salt Lake and was somewhere in the 50s on the mountain. Definitely spring-skiing conditions. The Canyons resort is pretty cool. From the main parking lot, you take a lift to the base of the mountain, going over a bunch of multi-million dollar condos and townhouses.

The resort itself is huge! We started out on the right side (looking up the mountain) and actually didn’t even make it to the far left side. This was partly because I found some good-sized jumps in one of the parks and wanted to take a bunch of runs through it.

For dinner, we ate at Sage’s Cafe, the same vegan restaurant that we had hit last time we were here, and then returned to our cheap hotel (The Microtel). The next morning, we were both feeling really tired. Whether we were just getting old, not in very good shape, or whatever, we decided to not go riding and just try to catch an earlier flight home. We ate breakfast again at Sage’s Cafe; the breakfast there is actually not very good - it’s better to stick with the lunch/dinner food. Since we had some time to kill before our changed flight, we drove to do some shopping at the outlet stores near The Canyons that we had spotted the other day.

Travel all the way to Utah for a single day of riding?!! Are we lame or what?!! Going to The Canyons turned out to be a really, really expensive endeavor, but hey, that’s one of the many advantages of being a DINK. :-) Short trip, but we did manage to snap some pics and vids.

Thanks Tee-Roy! I’m a long way from a 540, but I’m working on it! :-)

I just noticed that you’ve got a site too. I’ll have to check it out some time.

Got something to say?
